welcome to march.

can you believe it's march already? but what happened to my warm spring weather? i'm going to need it to come back...

over the weekend, austin and i did quite a few things.

friday night, we went with joee, his dad and stepmom to champy's for the crawfish boil. they all went last year and didn't want to miss it this year. i'd never been to champy's before, but of course i did not partake in the crawfish. i had a salad.

austin and joe split three pounds of the mixture. most of it is gone, as you can see.

but this, to be honest, grosses me out.

personally, i prefer my food to be a little less... leggy.

saturday, austin and i had work to do around the house. we replaced the door knob on the front door, bought a new faucet for the bathroom sink {which is still a work in progress}, and i got a new house plant. a big one.

sunday, i had to go with willingly went with austin to the big major league soccer game that was in town. unfortunately, it was all of zero degrees, so i was miserable. but austin busted out the zoom lens and snapped a few good pictures of the game.

this looks like an intense hammy injury.

since it was so incredibly cold, we left at halftime and we headed downtown to grab some warm drinks at starbucks to thaw out a little bit. however, we didn't make it. austin may or may not have driven my car through a giant pothole in the road, which promptly resulted in a flat tire. awesome. so we pull into a parking lot and freeze as we change the tire {i mostly watched, but helped when i was needed}. what makes this even better is that my spare tire was... flat. even more awesome, right?

good news it my car has two brand new tires and is all aligned and stuff now-woo!

so that was our weekend: crawfish, housework, futbol, and flat tires.

hope you all had a great weekend!

sicknasty.

i am writing this post mostly as a warning to anyone shopping at publix this week.

{and maybe as a little bit of a rant, as well}

publix has a promotion called "buy theirs, get ours free" in which you purchase the national brand of a particular item and receive the publix brand equivalent for free. normally, this is a good thing.

this week, it was not.

we needed some baked beans for our dinner. we bought bush's brand vegetarian baked beans in a 28 ounce can and received the publix brand for free. we cracked open the publix brand for our dinner tonight and i. was. disgusted.

let's compare:

publix:
looks like discolored mush and smelled horrific.

bush's:
looks like baked beans. smelled like baked beans {kind of what you expect, huh?}.

it was almost as if the publix brand beans were the equivalent of curdled milk. sicknasty.

just a warning if you had baked beans on your publix shopping list this week.

and p.s.-yes. i promptly e-mailed publix customer service...

{i think i'm turning into my grandfather. but they really do need to know about these things... really.}

established 2010.

{look! a post not about gardening!}

this morning i finished my most recent craft project. it was pretty quick and easy.

i started with some plain wooden blocks bought at hobby lobby {for those of you back home, hobby lobby is kinda like michael's}. i got 12 blocks for about six bucks. i should have printed a coupon, but i'm stupid and didn't. oh well.

i spray painted the blocks brown.

then i busted out these cute little alphabet stickers i've had in my scrapbooking collection for a while now.
i got them on discount at big lots, of all places.

i stuck the stickers on the blocks, sealed them with a coat of mod podge and put 'em up on my shelf to spell out "the heards."
i love. {but please excuse that little nick in the paint on my shelf... grr.}

now, in case you forgot, i was looking for things to put on the lonely shelves, so this has one shelf covered. now i'm trying to decide if i should put some more letter blocks on the second shelf. i was thinking of making some that say "est. 2010." you know, as in "the heards, established 2010." i'm afraid that it will be too much of the blocks. or maybe just too cheesy. thoughts? opinions? anything?

forgot one.

i forgot to include this adorable picture.

i think juliet just might miss copper when he moves out...

what a difference a day makes.

ok. so i know you all probably don't care about my garden. but i'm just so excited about how quickly things are coming up!

look how much these beets came up since yesterday! and the broccoli is really taking off!

ok. enough about that. since it's been pretty warm outside lately, we've been opening the windows to get some fresh air in. the animals all fight over the window seat now!

julie boo observing.

who's down there?

dinger wants some window time!

oh, geez. this is my life. photographing my animals. ugh.

lastly, the first of our daffodils bloomed today. this makes me happy.

so i cut a few blooms and put them in my new goodwill vase.

i could seriously fill my whole house with daffodils.

how does your garden grow?

very quickly, apparently.

we planted our seeds in the jiffy pots on saturday. today is tuesday. that's three days.

but check it out. we've got some serious growth in the lettuce and broccoli departments.

and a little bit of growth in the romaine aisle.

i can't believe they're coming up already!

we've also had some serious progress in daffodil growth {see how little they were just about 12 days ago}

our inside growers.

and the outside bunch.

and the winner for "first one to be ready to flower."

ok, so there's also this gigantically {is that a word?} huge bunch of daffodils in our little side garden. but since they aren't my planting, i'm less excited about them even though i'll be able to cut them soon to put into vases.

it seems spring is in full effect here at the heard house. well, even though it's technically still winter...
